Simulation helps Ridgewood police better handle future encounters with people with autism

Police officers know plenty about training for certain situations, and now a police department in New Jersey is learning a new playbook when encountering individuals with autism.

In honor of National Autism Acceptance Month, Ridgewood police officers on Thursday took part in a simulation exercise developed by the JoyDew Foundation to help de-escalate possible situations with people who are on the spectrum.

JoyDew was founded because I have two sons with autism approaching age 21. Like most parents of young adults with autism, we faced the urgent need to find them employment, education, and social opportunities as they exited the school system. JoyDew is an organization that believes these young adults have unique abilities. We created a workplace where they can develop careers and build social connections in a supportive, friendly environment. Once we identify their strengths, we match them with high-value jobs, allowing them to provide services to other companies.
