What happens when an autistic person spends a lifetime being underestimated?

For many parents of autistic adults, this question is deeply personal.

You may have watched someone assume your son or daughter didn’t understand because they couldn’t speak. You may have seen expectations lowered because they communicated differently, needed support, or didn’t fit someone else’s definition of “independent.”

The problem with these assumptions is that they don’t stay assumptions. They become decisions…and those decisions can shape an entire life.

If we assume someone isn’t employable, they may never receive meaningful job training.

If we assume a non-speaking person doesn’t understand, they may be denied meaningful education.

If we assume someone who needs support can’t make choices, decisions may continually be made for them.

And over time, the consequences add up.

A missed educational opportunity can mean fewer choices in adulthood.

A lack of meaningful social opportunities can become isolation.

A lack of job training can become lifelong unemployment.

Years of low expectations can become a life with far fewer opportunities than might have been possible.

But what happens when we change the assumptions?

What if we presume competence?

Focus on strengths?

Support communication?

Accept autistic people as they are?

And create real opportunities for friendship, learning, meaningful work, independence, and purpose?

At JoyDew, we’re seeing what can happen.

In our recent outcomes data, members reporting a sense of life purpose increased from 20% to 100%, while social interaction increased from 10% to 90%. We also saw gains in education and skills.

Those numbers represent something much bigger: autistic adults discovering abilities, relationships, opportunities, and purpose that others may never have expected.

It leaves us with an important question:

How many autistic people have been treated as though they had little potential when what they really lacked was the opportunity and support to show us what was possible?

We can’t give autistic adults back the opportunities lost to years of low expectations.

But we can change what happens next.

It starts by replacing assumptions with possibility…and building systems with autistic people, not simply for them.

We know more about autism today. It’s time for the opportunities we create for autistic adults to reflect what we now know.
