JoyDew and Friends of Princeton Open Space Launch GIS Partnership to Advance Forest Conservation and Workforce Development for Autistic Adults

For parents of adults with autism, one of the biggest questions is often: What does a meaningful adult life look like?

At JoyDew, we believe it includes purpose, community, growth, and the opportunity to use unique strengths in ways that matter.

We’re excited to share a six-month GIS partnership between JoyDew and Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS). The pilot kicked off with JoyDew members visiting the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve in Princeton to begin a Beech Tree Health Mapping and Monitoring project.

More than 400 beech trees at the Preserve have been found to be infected with Beech Leaf Disease, a condition that can kill trees within a few years. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), JoyDew members will help map tree locations, document disease symptoms and canopy health, and build data tools that support conservation decisions.

For our members, this is much more than a technology project. It is work with real purpose.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in GIS data collection, mapping, quality assurance, spatial analysis, and visualization—skills that can open doors to careers in technology and geospatial sciences. They will also see the direct impact of their work.

For families, projects like this show what is possible when autistic adults are given opportunities built around their strengths, interests, and potential. Workforce development should create pathways to contribution, confidence, belonging, and a future.

This partnership brings together JoyDew’s commitment to whole-life support and workforce development with FOPOS’s expertise in conservation and stewardship. Together, we’re creating opportunities for autistic adults to learn, contribute, and help solve real-world challenges.

We’re proud of our members and excited to see where this work leads. Learn more click here.
